Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar will begin commercial passenger operations on 15 June 2026, opening Delhi NCR's second international gateway and creating immediate competitive pressure on Indira Gandhi International (IGI).
The first phase will operate at 12 million passengers per year capacity, scaling to 70 million by 2040. Initial route announcements include domestic trunk routes plus select Gulf and Southeast Asia destinations. Travel retail tenders for the airport were awarded earlier this year — the duty-free, F&B, and specialty concessions are now in fit-out.
Why it matters for travel retail: NIA is the first major Indian greenfield airport to open with a fully modern airside commercial layout designed from scratch. IGI's T3 was state-of-the-art in 2010 but is now retrofitted; NIA starts clean. The competition for Delhi-region premium passengers — and their wallets — has just become a two-airport race. Brand teams and operators with allocations at both airports will need to think hard about positioning, pricing, and exclusive launches.
